Privacy Policy

Overview

ChoreBoard ("we," "our," or "us") is a family chore tracking application. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect information when you use our app. We take the privacy of children seriously and comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and applicable state and federal privacy laws.

Who Uses This App

ChoreBoard is designed for family use. A parent or guardian ("Parent") sets up and administers the family account. Children ("Kids") use the app under direct parental supervision. We do not knowingly permit children under 13 to create accounts independently — all child profiles are created and controlled by a Parent.

Information We Collect

• Family information: Family name and a 4-digit parent PIN you create.
• Child profiles: First name (or nickname), age, and an optional avatar — either an emoji or a photo you upload.
• Chore and activity data: Chores assigned, completed, approved, and rejected; coin balances; streaks; achievements.
• Photos (optional): If a Parent uploads a profile photo on behalf of a child, that image is stored on our servers. Photos are only used to display the child's avatar within your family's account.
• Device data: We do not collect location data or build advertising profiles about users. To display non-personalized ads, our advertising provider may process limited technical information (such as general device type and coarse region) as described in the "Advertising" section below.

COPPA Notice — Children Under 13

In compliance with COPPA (15 U.S.C. § 6501 et seq.):

• All child profiles are created by a Parent, not by the child independently.
• We collect a child's first name, age, and optional avatar photo solely to provide the chore-tracking service within your family.
• We do not require children to provide more information than is reasonably necessary to participate in the activities offered through the app.
• We do not share children's personal information with third parties for commercial purposes.
• Any advertising shown in the app is non-personalized (contextual) only — we and our advertising providers do not use children's personal information to profile them or serve targeted ads.
• Parents may review, update, or delete their child's information at any time through the Parent Dashboard → Manage → Kids section.
• Parents may request complete deletion of all family data by contacting us (see "Contact Us" below). We will fulfil the request within 30 days.

How We Use Your Information

We use collected information solely to:

• Operate and display the ChoreBoard app for your family.
• Track chore assignments, completions, approvals, and coin balances.
• Display profile avatars within your family's private account.
• Maintain and improve app reliability and security.

How We Store and Protect Data

All data is stored on secure servers (PostgreSQL database) and uploaded files are stored in Google Cloud Storage behind access controls. Data is transmitted over HTTPS/TLS.

Parent PINs are encrypted using industry-standard hashing and are never stored in readable form. PIN verification happens securely on our servers. We strongly recommend choosing a PIN that is not used elsewhere and keeping it confidential from children.

We retain your data as long as your account is active. You may request full deletion at any time.

Advertising

ChoreBoard displays advertising to help support the app. Because ChoreBoard is a child-directed service, all advertising is non-personalized (contextual) only:

• Ads are not based on tracking, profiling, or a user's past behavior.
• We do not use or share children's personal information to target ads.
• We instruct our advertising providers to treat all traffic from this app as child-directed and to serve only non-personalized ads, in accordance with COPPA and the providers' policies.
• Advertising providers may process limited, non-identifying technical information needed to deliver, frequency-cap, and measure non-personalized ads.

Information Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information or your children's information with third parties for marketing or advertising purposes.

We may use trusted service providers (e.g., cloud infrastructure) who access data only as needed to operate the service and are bound by confidentiality obligations.

We may disclose information if required by law, court order, or to protect the safety of users.

Photos and Profile Images

Profile photos are uploaded voluntarily by the Parent on behalf of a child. Photos are:

• Stored in private cloud storage accessible only within your family account.
• Not shared with other families, advertisers, or third parties.
• Removable at any time by the Parent by switching back to an emoji avatar.

Your Rights and Choices

As a Parent, you may at any time:

• Access all data stored for your family via the app.
• Edit or delete any child's profile (Parent Dashboard → Manage → Kids).
• Delete your entire family account and all associated data by contacting us.
• Opt out of any optional data collection features.

Residents of California may have additional rights under the CCPA. Residents of the European Economic Area may have rights under the GDPR. Please contact us to exercise these rights.

Data Retention

We retain your data for as long as your family account is active. Chore history and transaction records are retained to provide accurate coin balances and achievement records. You may request deletion of all data at any time.

Third-Party Services

The app uses the following third-party providers:

• Google Cloud Storage — for storing uploaded profile photos.
• Hosting infrastructure — for running the app server and database.
• Google AdMob — to serve non-personalized (contextual) ads.

Apart from serving non-personalized ads, these providers are used solely to operate the service and do not use your data for their own marketing purposes.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy. For material changes affecting children's data, we will provide notice within the app.
